Judith Malina Founded The Living Theatre in 1947 with Julian Beck. Their purpose was to establish a repertory theatre of contemporary plays which could enable them to try to find new forms of communication and expression in theatre art. In addition to „The Brig", Miss Malina served as director for the award winning production of Jack Gelber's „The Connection" when The Living Theatre presented it in New York, Brecht's „In The Jungle of Cities", „The Apple", „The Marrying Maiden", „Orpheus", Picasso's „Desire Trapped by The Tail", „The Age of Anxiety", „Dr Faustus Lights The Lights", „The Spook Sonata" and many others. As actress, she appeared in William Carlos Williams' „Many Loves", „Tonight We Improvise", „In The Jungle of Cities", „Women of Trachis", „Phèdre", as Widow Begbick in „Man Is Man" and in more than a dozen other Living Theatre productions.

Judith Malina fonda avec Julian Beck The Living Theatre en 1947. Leur but était de créer un théâtre de répertoire pour pièces contemporaines et d'avoir ainsi l'outil nécessaire pour pouvoir rechercher de nouvelles formes d'expression et de communication dans l'art dramatique.

Judith Malina dirigea les productions de « The Connection », « Dr Faustus Lights the Lights », des pièces de Brecht créées à New York, etc... et en dernier lieu de The Brig.

Judith Malina est également actrice et joua dans de nombreux spectacles de son théâtre.

Julian Beck Received the Best Designer of the Year Award Off-Broadway for his work on „The Brig". He has designed all of The Living Theatre's productions since "Dr Faustus Lights The Lights" opened The Living Theatre in 1951. He has directed many of the theatre's productions including Brecht's „Man Is Man", „Many Loves", „Tonight We Improvise", and „Women of Trachis". As an actor he has played roles in „The Apple", „Many Loves", „In the Jungle of Cities", „The Spook Sonata", „Phèdre", „Tonight We Improvise", and „Man Is Man", etc... In addition he is a painter and a poet.

Julian Beck reçut pour The Brig le prix de la meilleure création de Broadway. Il est, avec Judith Malina, l'âme de toutes les créations du Living Theatre depuis 1951. Il est également acteur et a joué dans « The Apple », « In the Jungle of Cities », « The Spook Sonata », « Phèdre », « Tonight we Improvise », etc...

En plus de cela, il est peintre, poète (a fait paraître un volume sous le titre « Songs of the Revolution ») et écrivain d'une étude sur « The Life of the Theatre ».

Because the Living Theatre is a repertory company and because we believe that an actor is at his most creative when playing a variety of roles, as well as because of the special demands of The Brig, the roles are differently distributed at each performance.

At the foot of Mount Fujiyama in central Japan, there was an American Marine infantry unit known as the Third Marines. In the centre of an area two miles square enclosed by barbed wire, which contained many single-level, wooden, cement-floored barracks and a lesser number of conventional quonset huts, there was a green wooden building that was smaller than the rest. This was the penal institution of the organisation, known as the brig. Because it was a place of horrible disciplinary extremes, it was feared and ignored by those members of the unit not directly connected with it. It stood as an example of the consequences for those who would not, could not, or wished not to conform to the rigid routine of the Third Marines.

Au pied du mont Fujiyama, dans le centre du Japon, il y avait une unité d'infanterie de marine américaine dénommée Third Marines. Au centre d'un vaste camp de deux miles de côté, clôturé de fil de fer barbelé et comprenant des baraquements sans étage et en plus petit nombre des huttes démontables, il y avait une construction plus petite que les autres, de couleur verte. C'était l'institution pénitentiaire de l'unité, c'était The Brig.

Parce que c'était un lieu de procédés disciplinaires extrêmes, il était craint et ignoré des membres de l'unité qui n'était pas en contact direct avec lui.

Il était là comme un exemple, un exemple des conséquences qui frappaient ceux qui ne voulaient pas, ou ne pouvaient pas, ou ne désiraient pas se soumettre au règlement du Third Marines.

Ken Brown, born in Brooklyn, N.Y., March 9, 1936. Was conditioned in academic studies by nuns and Jesuits through 1954. Was schooled in killing by the U.S. Marine Corps through 1957. Was oppressed by intellectualism at Columbia University as long as they tolerated my curiosity. Was taught to make money as a bartender in the New York restaurant business. Found love at The Living Theatre. Second play, „Three Dreams from Dell's Couch", opening in San Francisco in October. Third play, „The Green Room", will be done at Judson Poets Theatre in N.Y. when the company you see returns. Fourth play, "The Happy Bar", will be published by Hill and Wang next year, and may appear soon here. „The Brig" will be published by Hill and Wang as I revised it for The Living Theatre (original script appeared in Tulane Review). Other published work : Kulchur 14, City Lights Journal, East Side Review.

Kenneth H. Brown est né à Brooklyn, N.Y. le 9 mars 1936. II fit ses études chez les Jésuites et initié à l'art de tuer par les U.S. Marine Corps en 1957. Il compléta ses études à l'Université de Columbia et ensuite essaya de gagner de l'argent comme barman dans des restaurants new-yorkais.

C'est au Living Theatre qu'il s'éprit du théâtre et qu'il présenta The Brig. Il a écrit une seconde pièce "Three Dreams from Dell's Couch" qui va être créée à San Francisco cet hiver et une troisième „The Green Room" qui la sera à New York par la troupe que vous voyez ce soir. Il en a déjà terminé une quatrième „The Happy Bar". Toutes ces pièces connaissent ou connaîtront les honneurs de la publication.
